Join Austin Parks and Recreation for the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center on Saturday, May 16, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 35 Robert T. Martinez Jr. St. This will be a free, family-friendly field day honoring the center’s long-standing commitment to outdoor adventure, youth programming, and community connection. All ages are welcome to attend. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please RSVP so that we know you are coming!

Community members may drop in at any time during the event and participate in a variety of activities. Guided kayaking trips and guided bike rides will run on the hour. There will also be archery, field-day games, Camacho film screenings and throwback videos, and free food and beverages. All equipment will be provided, though participants may bring their own bicycles or other personal gear if they prefer.

The Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center opened in September 2000 in honor of Lorraine Camacho, a longtime East Austin resident, community matriarch, and advocate for children. Camacho dedicated more than 40 years to supporting youth in her neighborhood through volunteer work with local schools, PTAs, and Reading Is Fundamental. Her home served as one of the first McGruff Houses in Austin, providing a safe place for children in need.

Today, the Camacho Activity Center continues her legacy by offering outdoor recreation, nature-based education, cultural arts programming, adventure activities, adaptive recreation for people of all abilities, and an expansive youth filmmaking program with more than 100 films in its online catalog.
