The City of Austin Office of Police Oversight hosted its Quarterly Police Oversight Implementation Working Group Meeting on Thursday, August 14, 2025. Below is a full recap of the meeting and the slide deck presentation.
Communications/Community Engagement Division
The Communications and Community Engagement Division shared a recap of OPO’s 2025 Open House, held on July 19, 2025. The Open House provided community members with an interactive look at OPO’s complaint process and highlighted how the Austin Police Oversight Act and the 2024 Meet & Confer Agreement expanded OPO’s scope of work.
Event highlights included:
- 70+ registrations
- 31 community events attended to promote the Open House
- 1,200+ community members reached through in-person engagement
- 47,000 households reached through digital outreach
- OPO featured on ATXN “At Your Service” Podcast, CBS News, KXAN, Community Impact, The Austin American-Statesman, and Austin Chronicle
Policy & Research Division
OPO’s Policy & Research Division discussed its work evaluating APD Academy curriculum. Through participation in the Professional Advisory Committee and research of national best practices, the division reviews training content and provides feedback to strengthen quality and alignment.
Recently reviewed and recommended curriculum updates include:
- Interacting with the Deaf & Hard of Hearing
- Civil Process
- Health & Safety Code
- and more

Quarterly Complaints Data Update
As outlined in Resolution 99, OPO shares quarterly data on complaints, investigations, and recommendations at each Working Group meeting.
At the August 14th meeting, the Complaints Division shared data related to complaints, investigations, and recommendations, as well as explained the process for handling anonymous vs. non-anonymous complaints.

Community Safety Listening Session
Based on community feedback, OPO added a new Community Safety Listening Session to the Working Group agenda. The purpose of this session is to give community members a dedicated space to share priorities, ask questions, and provide feedback on public safety.
On August 14, OPO welcomed Commissioner Jerry Joe Benson (LGBTQ Quality of Life Commission & Joint Inclusion Committee) to share background and insights on a developing Community Liaison proposal. View the proposal here.
Following the presentation, community members discussed:
- Ways to strengthen transparency and accountability with APD
- Concerns and priorities related to community safety for all Austinites

OPO After Action Report
Starting this quarter, OPO will publish an After-Action Report after each quarterly Work Group meeting. The report will summarize:
- Community Safety Listening Session discussions
- Key takeaways and learnings
- Actionable items OPO will incorporate into operations, policy research, or engagement initiatives

División de Comunicaciones/Participación Comunitaria
La División de Comunicaciones y Participación Comunitaria compartió un resumen de la Jornada de Puertas Abiertas 2025 que realizó la OPO el 19 de julio de 2025. La Jornada de Puertas Abiertas brindó a los miembros de la comunidad la oportunidad de ver en detalle el proceso de quejas de la OPO y cómo la Ley de Fiscalización de la Policía de Austin y el Acuerdo de Reunión y Consulta de 2024 expandió el alcance de trabajo de la OPO.
Entre los puntos destacados del evento se encuentran:
- Más de 70 inscritos.
- Asistencia a 31 eventos comunitarios para promover la Jornada de Puertas Abiertas.
- Más de 1,200 miembros de la comunidad contactados en persona.
- 47,000 hogares contactados por vía digital.

División de Políticas e Investigaciones
La División de Políticas e Investigaciones de la OPO discutió su trabajo de evaluación del currículo de la Academia de APD. Sesión participativa sobre seguridad comunitaria
Partiendo de los comentarios de la comunidad, la OPO agregó una nueva sesión participativa sobre seguridad comunitaria a la agenda del Grupo de Trabajo. El objetivo de esta sesión es brindarle a la comunidad un espacio dedicado para compartir sus prioridades, hacer preguntas y ofrecer sus comentarios sobre seguridad pública.
El 14 de agosto, la OPO recibió al comisionado Jerry Joe Benson (Comisión de Calidad de Vida de la Comunidad LGBTQ y Comité Conjunto de Inclusión) para compartir información sobre el desarrollo de una propuesta de Enlace Comunitario. Vea la propuesta aquí.
