National Police Week is a week when officers from around the world gather in Washington D.C. to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Honoring these heroes and their families transcends not only law enforcement agencies, but all public safety professions. This year, members of the Austin Police (APD) were joined by members of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS), Austin Fire (AFD), The University of Texas Police Department (UTPD) and the Texas Department of Parks & Wildlife in rendering those honors.

These public safety personnel came together to form the Texas First Responder Memorial Pipe Band. Over the past nine months, the Texas First Responder Memorial Pipe Band spent countless hours, most on their own time, rehearsing so the very best of Texas was on display. The band rendered honors to the fallen during the National Memorial Service located at the United States Capital, as well as during the National Emerald Society Parade and memorial. The band competed in the 23rd annual Honor Guard & Pipe and Drum Competition, accomplishing third place out of the eight bands that competed.

Chief Davis and APD wish to recognize the commitment of the public service personnel to never forget those who sacrificed so much for their communities. We appreciate the interagency cooperation, teamwork, and the dedication it took in creating this band with each member giving their very best to the families of the survivors.
