My ATX Water
My ATX Water is Austin's city-wide smart meter system.
Austin City Council approved contracts on March 26, 2020, allowing Austin Water to modernize its water metering system. Over the following five years, our technicians replaced more than 250,000 analog water meters with electronically read meters connected to a wireless network, providing customers with near-real-time water use data, customized notifications, and leak alerts through the My ATX Water Customer Portal.
The smart meter project is an important part of the water conservation goals set in Austin Water's 100-year water resource plan, Water Forward.
Customer Portal Features
- Custom notifications for sudden increases in water use that could indicate a leak
- Near-real-time daily water use data
- Water budgeting alerts if your usage exceeds a threshold you set
- Water use reports to help you reduce consumption and lower your monthly bill
- A link to pay your utility bill through City of Austin Utilities
You will need your Austin Water account number to sign up. After signing up, you will no longer need it to log in. For questions, email myatxwater@austintexas.gov.
Your Smart Meter
Your digital meter transmits water use data daily to the customer portal through a secure, encrypted wireless connection. The meter is battery powered with a typical 10-year battery life, and Austin Water will replace the battery when needed. Because the meter is battery powered, power outages will not affect data collection.
Austin Water does not have the ability to remotely turn off or regulate your water use. Data transmission is encrypted and anonymous. Your water service can only be turned off manually.
Meter Data and Your Bill
Water use data is typically available in the portal within 24 hours of consumption. Your monthly bill for water and wastewater services has not changed. You may notice a change in measured water use because digital meters measure water use more accurately than aging analog meters, but you are only billed for the water you actually use.
Opting Out
If you previously chose to opt out of the wireless communications device, your meter still has a digital display but does not transmit automated readings. A $10 monthly charge for manual meter reading applies. Opting out means you will not receive daily water use data, high-use notifications, leak alerts or emergency water information through the portal. To change your opt-out status, contact us at myatxwater@austintexas.gov.
