Williamson Creek

Project Overview

This project will reduce the risk of flooding of homes, yards and streets through an upgraded storm drain system that includes detention pond improvements, upgraded storm drain pipe and new storm drain inlets. The original storm drain system in the Brassiewood Drive area was designed and constructed using outdated drainage criteria and is not able to handle large rain events. Homes and streets sometimes flood during heavy rainfall.

This multi-phase project builds on work done in 2021 and 2025 to increase the capacity of the storm drain system and improve drainage.

Status

Phase 2 will start in July 2026. Work on phase 1 is mostly complete.

  • Phase 2 Cost

    $3.3 million

    Phase 2 is funded from the Drainage Utility Fund, the Regional Stormwater Management Program and 2018 voter-approved bonds.

Phase 2 Project Map

This project is in the Williamson Creek watershed. It takes place on South Pleasant Valley Road near Brassiewood Drive and Creekbend Drive. It also includes work in the detention pond between Aviary Cove and South Pleasant Valley Road and on the banks of Williamson Creek.

Phase 2: South Pleasant Valley Road Outfall

This phase will enlarge the detention pond outlet at Aviary Cove and construct a new storm drain along Pleasant Valley Road. The new outlet will capture more stormwater and lower the risk of the pond overtopping. This outlet will connect to a new storm drain system along Pleasant Valley Drive, which will convey the stormwater from the pond into Williamson Creek near the Pleasant Valley Bridge to the south. 

Austin City Council authorized the construction contract on May 7, 2026. Construction is anticipated to start in July 2026.

What to Expect During Construction

This is a major construction project. Please be patient while we work to reduce the risk of flooding in your neighborhood. Please expect:

  • Noise, dust, and increased activity.
  • South Pleasant Valley Road to be reduced to two lanes, one in each direction, during construction.
  • Temporary closure of the sidewalk and bike lane on the west side of South Pleasant Valley Road.
  • Digging behind the curb in some spots to modify inlets and install water meters and fire hydrants.

The road is part of an active construction site. Final paving will happen after all work is complete. In the meantime, we are sweeping the street and applying temporary asphalt patches.

Things to Remember

  • Please slow down around workers, obey all signage, and do not park in "No Parking" zones.
  • Stay out of all fenced-off areas and keep child and pets away from construction sites and equipment.
  • Leave extra time for travel.
Water, Garbage and Utilities

Set your garbage, recycling, and yard trimmings out as usual.

We will need to shut off water periodically to complete some of the work for this project. We will leave a notice 48 hours in advance with two exceptions:

  • We may briefly turn off water without notice to test valves and equipment ahead of a planned outage.
  • There is always the possibility of a temporary, loss of water or other service if a pipe or line is broken. We’ll respond immediately to restore service if this happens. We have done a lot of research ahead of time to pinpoint where all the underground utilities are. This should help us avoid breaking any pipes.

Home Access

Driveway access will be maintained. If the work is directly in front of your driveway, there may be a 15-minute delay while crews secure the area for safe access. Please leave extra time for travel.

Trees

Trees are important to us, and we try to affect as few as possible. However, we will need to remove 11 trees on South Pleasant Valley Road. We are not removing any heritage trees.

We will be storing equipment and materials within right of way in areas where we’re working and near the outfall.

Phase 1 - Brassiewood Dr. and Creekwood Dr. Storm Drain Improvements

Phase 1 includes a new storm drain line that runs along Softwood Drive and Creek Bend Drive before reaching the outfall just east of the existing flood wall into Williamson Creek. This captures a significant portion of the stormwater that previously flowed into the detention pond at the end of Aviary Cove. Construction cost is estimated at $2,253,322. 

May 2026: There are a few tasks remaining for Phase 1, which is expected to be complete in May 2026, weather permitting.

Phase 1: What to Expect During Construction

For your safety, please stay aware of safety fencing and signage and keep children and pets away from construction and equipment.

  • Work will be between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays and potentially some weekends.
  • Portions of streets may be closed during construction, but you will have access to your home. Allow an extra 15 minutes to enter and exit your driveway.
  • Cars will be towed to a nearby street if they are in active construction areas or blocking access to a staging area.
  • We are coordinating with the Neighborhood Partnering Program to ensure safe and accessible trails during construction.
  • There is always the potential for temporary, unexpected disruptions to services such as gas, water, electricity or cable. We will take care to avoid this.

Phase 3: Neighborhood Storm Drain Improvements

Phase 3 of the project will include general improvements to the stormwater infrastructure throughout the neighborhood, including inlet improvements, channel improvements, and bridge culvert improvements. This project is in the Preliminary Engineering (PER) phase to study options to further reduce the risk of flooding in the neighborhood. We recently received the Preliminary Engineering Report and expect design to be complete by fall 2027, depending on the availability of funding.
