Austin selected as the 2026 winner of the John Patton Community Project Award by the Texas Floodplain Management Association.
Austin, TX - The Texas Floodplain Management Association has named Austin the 2026 winner of the John Patton Community Project Award, in honor of the city’s commitment to reducing the risk of flooding. The John Patton Award, which includes a $500 grant, recognizes Texas communities that demonstrate ongoing efforts to mitigate flood losses and protect lives through impactful community programs. Austin was selected for its comprehensive approach to flood safety, combining education, public awareness, and technology to engage residents and build citywide resilience.
“Austin is honored to receive this recognition,” said Jorge Morales, director of Austin Watershed Protection. “Our community-centered approach is focused on reaching people of all ages, to give them the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe before, during, and after flood events.”
Austin Watershed Protection uses several methods to engage with our community and raise awareness about flood safety. These include year-round campaigns in English and Spanish, emergency messaging, online tools, and public events to help residents understand their flood risk and take steps to protect themselves and their property.
The City of Austin maintains online resources such as ATXFloodSafety.com which gives residents guidance on how to prepare for floods, stay safe during emergencies, and recover afterward. Austin Watershed Protection also offers a wide range of educational programs such as the Adopt a Storm Drain Program, Flood Safety Video Contest, and flood preparedness training.
