AUSTIN, TX — Austin Watershed Protection has completed the January Drive Flood Risk Reduction project, a major investment to reduce localized flooding and improve drainage in the Four Seasons neighborhood. The work included more than 1,700 feet of new storm drain pipe, erosion controls, outfall improvements and landscape restoration to help protect homes, streets and creek areas around January Drive.

During 2015, powerful storms in Austin caused heavy flooding. This neighborhood reported several instances of water entering homes. One reason was that the existing storm drain system could not convey the large volume of runoff. This $1.93 million flood risk reduction project, funded by the 2018 voter approved bond election, addressed the undersized storm drain system by installing new storm drain pipe.  The project reduces flooding risk to over 70 properties and builds upon previous efforts, including buying out several homes along the creek and maintenance on a stormwater detention pond.

“This project reflects our commitment to protecting every Austin neighborhood from the impacts of severe weather,” said Jorge Morales, Director of Austin Watershed Protection. “By investing in stronger drainage systems now, we’re helping ensure that residents have the reliable infrastructure they need when storms become more intense and frequent.”

The project rerouted and upsized the existing storm drain system to underneath January Drive, placing most of the system within the public right of way for easier long-term maintenance. The project also removed invasive plant species and established a ‘Grow Zone’ at the creek outfall to reduce future erosion. These improvements were delivered by Austin Watershed Protection and Austin Capital Delivery Services.

“These upgrades will help protect homes, restore the creekside environment and ensure the drainage system can serve residents for years to come,” said Morales.

The January Drive Flood Risk Reduction project is part of the City’s long-term effort to strengthen drainage systems, reduce localized flooding and build more resilient infrastructure across Austin. It is also increasing Austin’s open space and park system.
