BACKGROUND

The Artist in Residence (AIR) program embeds local artists within City departments to use art as a tool for community connection, cultural storytelling, and engagement around the I-35 corridor. Created jointly by ACME and Austin Transportation & Public Works (ATPW) as part of the Our Future 35 initiative, the program integrates East Austin’s cultural history into mobility planning and fosters collaboration between artists, City staff, and the communities they serve.

The program launched in May 2026 with Candy Coated 35, a free community celebration at Waterloo Greenway marking the culmination of Artist in Residence Cat Carter’s residency. Founded of SuperWoman Records, Carter blended live music, oral histories, step and dance performance, and cultural storytelling to honor East Austin’s history. “Candy Coated 35 shows exactly what happens when Austin invests in artists to help shape the future of our city,” said Laura Odegaard, Acting Division Manager of Cultural Affairs and Investments at ACME. “Cat Carter’s residency has brought creativity, connection, and East Austin’s cultural brilliance into the heart of the City’s mobility work—and we are thrilled to celebrate that with the community.”

Memorias Project 2026 is the second and final public event of the AIR residency. Drawing on archival research from the Austin History Center, Preservation Austin, and Mexic-Arte Museum, the project invites audiences to engage with collective histories through an immersive, participatory art experience.
