Project Overview

The Gillis Street Water and Wastewater Pipeline Renewal Project is part of Renewing Austin, an Austin Water project dedicated to replacing aging water and wastewater main lines throughout the city. With this work we are conserving water, improving reliability for customers, and reducing expenditures on frequently breaking lines.

Through the Gillis Street Project, Austin Water will replace approximately 1,400 linear feet of water main lines and 1,700 linear feet of wastewater mains. The new lines will be installed on Gillis Street between Casey Street and Philco Drive.

For the construction phase of this project, Austin Water will partner with the City of Austin’s Capital Delivery Services division, and their project management staff will supervise construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will you be closing streets?

A: We will be closing lanes of traffic, but not entire streets. You will always have access to your home. For brief periods during one or two days, driveway access may be limited.

Q: What are the working hours? Which days?

A: Workdays are expected to be Monday through Friday. Some weekend work may be required. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Q: How loud will it be?

A: You will hear heavy equipment during work hours. The City’s noise ordinance applies after 10 p.m.

Q: Will my water be turned off?

A: At some point your water will be turned off, but most likely just for a few hours on a single day. Crews put notices on doors before the water is turned off. In rare cases, an emergency may cause water to be turned off without notice, but we work hard to avoid this happening.

Q: Will you dig up my lawn?

A: Most work will be limited to the city’s right-of-way (ROW). The right of way extends 10-15 feet back from the curb, and usually people think of this as their private property. If you have irrigation system pipes, landscape features or retaining walls in the City of Austin right-of-way, they may need to be moved in advance of construction on your street. If personal property is left in the right of way, repairs and costs to repair these features are the responsibility of the homeowner.

Q: What are your plans for repaving the streets?

A: We will repair trenches during the course of construction. When the entire project is completed, streets will be repaved using a mill and overlay process.
