AUSTIN, Texas – Today, June 29, 2023, a special event is taking over the Asleep at the Wheel AUS Main Stage to raise awareness for mental health services that serve our local music community. Travelers in the terminal from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. will have chance to enjoy a curated live music line-up that showcases some of the best local Austin and Central Texas musicians. Travelers will also get the opportunity to make monetary donations to the SIMS Foundation, a nonprofit that provides mental health and substance use recovery services for musicians, music industry professionals, and their families.
“With more people flying in and out of our airport than ever before, we’re always looking for creative ways to raise the profile of the local arts and music scene to our travelers,” said Michael Pennock, AUS Music Program Coordinator. “Partnering with the SIMS Foundation, Deep Eddy Vodka and Delaware North to host this event is a great fit for airport partners to further support for local artists.”
The special music line-up features performances by Sour Bridges, Tony Kamel, Akina Adderley, Tomar & FC’s and Restos. Donations will be collected by the SIMS Foundation and will give travelers the opportunity to win prizes from Deep Eddy Vodka, the sponsoring partner of the AUS Asleep at the Wheel Main Stage and SIMS Foundation Day partner.
“We are excited to partner with Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Delaware North Companies, and Deep Eddy Vodka on this event which helps raise awareness and funds for vital mental health services for our music community,” said Patsy Dolan Bouressa, Executive Director of The SIMS Foundation. “It also gives us the opportunity to showcase the importance of our mission to the many thousands of travelers - both local Austinites and visitors - that pass through the airport on a daily basis.”
With one of the most recognized airport music programs in the country, with eight live music stages throughout the terminal, AUS averages over 1,000 live shows per year and connects over 50,000 daily arriving and departing travelers to live music. The airport is committed to supporting local artists through providing paid gig opportunities and finding creative ways to partner with area organizations to further support local musicians and performers.
