The report includes information about Austin Water’s proactive approach to quality control and details about the quality of Austin’s drinking water.

AUSTIN – Today, Austin Water released its 2024 Water Quality Report in accordance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements. The consumer confidence report provides annual data about Austin’s drinking water quality.

This year’s highlights include:

  • A comprehensive multi-year inspection conducted in compliance with EPA guidelines has shown that the city’s public water system is free of lead pipes. This milestone caps a decades-long effort to inventory and eliminate any lead infrastructure discovered in the system.
  • Austin Water’s year-long testing efforts reveal little to no detectable traces of per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) in the City’s drinking water. Because PFAS levels were either not detected or lower than upcoming EPA regulatory limits, no additional treatment to address these substances is required at this time.

“We all can be proud of living in a City that banned lead pipes long before it was required and in an area with strong environmental protections in place to protect the source of our drinking water from PFAS,” said Shay Ralls Roalson, Director of Austin Water.

The report also outlines the complex journey Austin’s precious source water takes as it flows from the Lower Colorado River through Lake Travis and Lake Austin to Austin Water treatment facilities before being distributed to homes and businesses throughout the community. The report describes the proactive steps Austin Water takes to keep our drinking water safe, including hourly water sampling and testing at multiple points in the system, preventive maintenance of crucial infrastructure, and other initiatives. The bottom line: Austin’s tap water meets or exceeds the strict standards set by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the EPA.

“Our hard-working 1,400 employees remain committed to exceptional water treatment and customer service in all conditions year-round,” said Shay Ralls Roalson, Director of Austin Water. “It is my privilege to serve the people of Austin alongside the rest of our dedicated water professionals. And I thank the Austin community for trusting Austin Water to faithfully provide your family with its drinking water.”

Additional information about Austin Water’s proactive approach to quality control and complete details about the quality of Austin’s drinking water can be found in the 2024 Water Quality Report or at www.AustinWater.org.
