AUS Honors HAAM Day’s 20th Anniversary in Style

The Barbara Jordan Terminal at AUS is often buzzing with iconic local music, but on September 23, that was especially the case as the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians’ (HAAM) Day 20th anniversary celebration was in full swing, featuring five different artists for passengers to enjoy throughout the day.

HAAM Day, the world’s largest one-day, all-local music festival, featured more than 250 performances at over 105 venues across Austin by more than 300 local musicians in less than 24 hours. AUS was honored to take part in the 20th anniversary and encouraged travelers to give back to a cause that directly supports the local artists who continue to make Austin the Live Music Capital of the World.

Wook Wizard kicked things off in the morning at Vino Volo bringing a mystical vibe to the west side of the terminal, as the one-man band featured the beatbox, shaker, woodblock, tambourine, guitar, and lead vocals. His unique sound gave travelers a nice feeling as they headed to their respective gates.

Around lunchtime, Manny "Smiley" Velazquez took the stage at Annie's, playing some old school vintage country songs with tunes from his newest album, Keep Smiling. He made sure to mention how important HAAM is to him personally, noting its vital role in supporting his family and health.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the terminal at the Austin City Market stage, Bonnie Whitmore and friends really brought the energy with bluesy" tunes and authentic vocals. The trio drew travelers to stop and listen as their musical range shone through with upbeat covers and funky tracks from her most recent album, Last Will and Testament.

In the late afternoon, Ruby Dice lit up the Tacodeli stage with her psychedelic country and uniquely cool aura. The “Queen of the Denim Disco,” she had people of all ages, including some kids in strollers, bobbing their heads as they stopped and gathered around the stage.

Then, to cap it all off, Jennifer Foster and the Audacity rose to the occasion on the Asleep at the Wheel main stage with her soulful and joyful energy that clearly resonated with the packed crowd. The five-piece included a wide array of female vocalists and provided the perfect finale to a full day of local music in the terminal.

Although the 20th Annual HAAM Day celebration has passed, you can still donate to HAAM and continue to help keep music in Austin alive and well! Contributions support even more hardworking musicians, DJs and music teachers by connecting them with affordable, comprehensive and life-saving health care services.
