Journey With AUS: A Look Back at 2025

If you traveled through Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) in 2025, you may have noticed some exciting changes underway.

This year marked an important chapter for Journey With AUS, our expansion program focused on improving the passenger experience today while preparing for Austin’s continued growth for years to come.

Here’s a look at what took place in 2025, and what’s ahead!

Breaking Ground on New Parking

On Feb. 28, 2025, AUS celebrated the groundbreaking of Phase 1 of the Yellow Garage, a seven-level parking facility that will add about 3,000 parking spaces once completed in 2026.

Once Phase 2 of the project is completed in 2027, this garage will have approximately 7,000 parking spaces close to the terminal, making it easier for travelers to park and get on their way.

Splitting this project up into two phases will enable our construction partner teams to move forward with the Red Garage removal to make way for a new Arrivals and Departures Hall, which is set to open in the early 2030s.

Adding Space Inside the Terminal

On May 12, 2025, AUS marked the start of construction on the Atrium Infill Project.

By filling in existing open space above baggage claim, this project will create more space for security screening and bag-check queuing lanes, helping reduce congestion and improve flow through the terminal, especially during peak travel seasons.

Improving the International Arrivals Experience

AUS celebrated the completion of the International Arrivals Improvements project on June 18, 2025. This project was the first significant completed project under the Journey With AUS expansion program to open to the public.

The project maximizes flexibility within the existing International Arrivals space by adding more room for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) processing, increasing the number of booths and expanding passenger queuing areas.

Once passengers clear the customs area, new baggage carousels can transition between international and domestic use, providing additional operational flexibility and a smoother experience for travelers.

Making Checked Bags More Reliable

The year concluded with the celebration of the completed Outbound Baggage Handling System on Dec. 10, 2025.

Passengers’ checked luggage now travels across 1.5 miles of conveyor belts, with the system capable of processing up to 4,000 bags per hour.

This new system improves reliability and efficiency for checked bags, helping reduce delays and ensuring luggage keeps pace with passengers, even during peak travel periods.

What’s Ahead in 2026

The momentum from 2025 carries into an exciting year ahead. In 2026, travelers can look forward to the completion of several major Journey With AUS projects, including the Atrium Infill Project, West Infill Project, West Gate Expansion Project and Yellow Garage Phase 1, along with the start of construction on additional projects within the program.

Thank you for traveling with us and for your patience as we continue to grow. Every project completed and every milestone reached brings us closer to giving our passengers a more spacious, comfortable and efficient airport experience.

We look forward to welcoming you back in 2026 to experience what’s next on the Journey With AUS!
